Just as Storm Claudia swept through the north-west the previous evening, Manchester City blew United away at the Etihad. It was a convincing 3-0 triumph for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their title credentials as they consolidated their position at the top of the table.

Consecutive Setbacks for Manchester United

This scoreline marked successive WSL setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, leaving them seven points off the top team with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capability to balance league and European soccer with a small roster has been a hotly discussed issue since they earned a place in the Champions League. Reviewing the fixture list, it always seemed this was the matchday that would truly test this fortitude. Unfortunately for the opposition, they seemed tired throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having had an impact.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had sought to freshen things up with a handful of changes. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added energy, although the dropping of the high-performing Malard to the substitutes was questioned.

Manchester City, in comparison, have no such workload concerns. Jeglertz made one change from their most recent win over Everton with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to build for the United boss and his side from the opening minute. This was a show of the quality from Manchester City whose potent forward line manipulated and pulled the visitors apart with a superb first half performance that saw them score three goals in 21 minutes.

This put the hosts firmly in control and left United struggling. Prior to this match, the away side had allowed just six in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the wake of City’s creative prowess.

Early Chances

The omens came soon when Miedema used her physicality to push Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to pull her shot wide. Lauren Hemp was at the center of everything early on, taking advantage of the gap left by Riviere down United’s right flank. Her crosses were creating danger and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had several sorties forward, their straightforward approach giving them choices in the wide areas but they could not test Ayaka Yamashita. Manchester City, on the other hand, dominated the ball, probing their rivals and trying to pull them out of their structure.

Triple Strike

They made their pressure count with almost half an hour played when Aoba Fujino won the hosts a corner. A delivery to the back post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was Manchester City's 7th header of the season.

They extended their lead with another pair of goals just before the break. When Rose was allowed to drive through the midfield from the back, the field widened for the hosts. The prominent Casparij received possession on the wing before sending a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Shortly later, they had a third after a quick turnover in the ball saw Lauren Hemp given the space to fire a shot home from outside the box.

After the Break

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the interval as Melvine Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the match. Ex- Manchester City player Park came most likely to score, striking the post, but the visitors were creatively abject and did not manage to produce a single shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have increased their cushion when a superb Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the winning team. Previously unable to defeat any team who ended above them in the prior term, Jeglertz’s side now have victories against the Gunners and United to position them in a commanding position after nine games.
