Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Cars, walls and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Officials report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.

City officials announced they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for information.

A senior official stated the attack left him speechless and needed to be solved rapidly.

"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a assailant focusing on people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
